Horse Saddle Pads
Your saddle pad is as important as your saddle or maybe even more important. The pad is what protects the horse's back against pressure from the saddle tree, rubbing, galling and slipping. Heat is your horse's biggest enemy. Where the saddle tree presses down, a horse is prone to bruising and heat build-up that can cause galling and sores.
A 1" thick piece of compressed wool (felt) is extremely efficient at reducing pressure point damage, which is caused by a combination of heat build-up, friction, and pressure. Genuine wool helps dissipate the heat. Wool’s ability to stretch and compress (known as “crimp”) makes it a superior compression protector to help prevent both pressure and friction. Wool also has a unique ability to deal with perspiration, wicking the sweat off your horse’s back and distributing it throughout the pad and away from the skin. Wool can absorb and wick up to 3 times its weight in water to keep the area under the saddle dry and comfortable.
The best pads are contoured to fit the dip in the horse's back over and behind the withers. These take much less "break in" to conform to your horse's shape. A conforming pad causes less over-cinching. A withers cut-out also makes fitting easier.
Less skirt around the edge of the saddle means less trapped heat and better leg contact with the sides of your horse for leg cues. Barrel Racing Pads are also generally a smaller footprint so that they do not interfere with the horse's loin and haunch in tight turns.
